My journey into mindfulness and wellness is deeply personal, shaped by moments of profound loss, despair, and redemption. These experiences have driven my unwavering commitment to helping others navigate their own challenges.
It all began during a period of immense difficulty when I was working in the high-stress environments of the oil and gas industry. The pressures of the job became overwhelming, and I found myself falling into a spiral of alcoholism and despair. My relationships began to crumble, my family dynamics were failing, and a general sense of apathy consumed me. I had lost my way, and it felt as though there was no way out.
During this dark time, I discovered mindfulness and breathwork. These practices became my lifeline. They helped me regain control of my life and slowly rebuild what had been broken. More importantly, they awakened a passion in me—a desire to share these life-changing tools with others who were also struggling.
My first experience helping others came when I worked as a peer counselor supporting veterans suffering from PTSD. These brave men and women had seen unimaginable things and were struggling to cope with the emotional and psychological toll of their experiences.
Working with them was eye-opening and deeply moving. I understood the intensity of their struggles and recognized the unique ways trauma manifests in people’s lives. Through this experience, I developed a deep sense of empathy and sharpened my ability to create supportive, healing environments for those in pain.
Later on, my path took me to work with alcoholics in recovery. I dedicated myself to helping them find their way out of the darkness, using mindfulness techniques to aid in their recovery. I saw how transformative these practices could be and how much of a difference they made in people’s lives, giving them the strength to rebuild.
Over time, I felt a growing pull back to my original passion—helping frontline healthcare workers. This passion came from a deeply personal place. Someone I dearly loved was a nurse, and I had been her closest confidant through her darkest days. I saw firsthand how the demands of her job took an emotional and physical toll on her. The long hours, relentless pressure, and constant exposure to suffering left her drained and isolated. I was there for her every step of the way, helping her get back on her feet each time life knocked her down.
Through her, I realized just how much healthcare professionals give of themselves to care for others, often with little support for their own well-being. I knew I had to do something to help these unsung heroes who were left to navigate their stress and burnout alone.
Building on my experiences with veterans and those in recovery, I decided to focus on creating a wellness program specifically designed for healthcare workers. I combined my mindfulness, resilience training, and emotional intelligence expertise with a deep understanding of their unique stressors. My approach is holistic and practical, acknowledging the time constraints and challenges that come with working in healthcare.
Through SereneWorx, I have become a passionate advocate for the well-being of healthcare workers. My programs are about reducing stress and creating a culture of compassion, resilience, and mindful leadership within healthcare institutions. I aim to reduce burnout, increase employee retention, and ultimately improve patient care by focusing on these elements. I truly believe that we can create a more compassionate and sustainable healthcare system by caring for those who care for others.
